This picture shows Harry Johannes' Bowling Alley next door to Hougen's.  Harold Dennison's residence is to the left.  Beyond that (out of the photo) is Len Metcalfe’s house and further east, on the corner of Third and Main Street, the Capitol Theatre.  In the foreground is the ballpark where the Federal Building was later built.

Rolf Hougen, Treasurer of the Whitehorse Winter Carnival, auctions off a garter at the '98, before it became a hotel.  The U.S. Army plays a major role in the carnival during "Operation Sweetbrier".  Betty Ronayne, Miss Armed Forces, is named the Carnival Queen.  The carnival runs from February 2nd to 5th.  Twelve thousand dollars is raised for the Civic Centre Fund.
